Madurodam

Visiting Madurodam was a very good surprise while I was in the Netherlands. It may seem an attraction mainly for children at first sight, but it ended up being much more interesting than I thought it’ld be! There are several one-day tours that can be made departing from Amsterdam. The trip to The Hague, where is located the miniature city of Madurodam, is one of them. I think this tour still ends up being underrated by the flow of visitors in the Dutch capital. As a first choice, almost everyone is keen to do a half day trip to the village of Zaanse Schans to see its famous windmills. After all, we are in Holland! After that, travelers normally open their minds to other attractions that exist across the country. As Netherlands is quite small, the distances are very short and it’s possible to make a one-day trip to almost everywhere departing from Amsterdam Central Station. In Madurodam, we have a representation of the biggest attractions of the Netherlands. Everything is 25 times smaller than the reality. The town is in full motion. Windmills turn, panoramic boats make tours through the canals and the train runs the city by the largest miniature railway in the world. We can see the houses with typical Dutch architecture along the canals of Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum, the tower of Utrecht Cathedral, an airport with many planes from KLM and much more. For those who are looking for tourist souvenirs, the place also has a shop with a great variety of amazing products. The Hague usually doesn’t have great attractions for travelers (besides its lovely architecture), but it’s definitely a very important place in the scenario international relations for the world. It’s known for its strong diplomatic tradition and is home to almost all Dutch government agencies even though the Constitution states that the capital is Amsterdam.
