Lisbon from the top

Lisbon is a historic city that has a quite different architecture from other European capitals. The buildings have that traditional style of the Portuguese architecture. From the top of viewing points of the city, we can appreciate breathtaking scenery that certainly deserve to be admired on a trip to the Portuguese capital. Below, you can see my five favorite places to the most amazing views of Lisbon.

1. Castelo de São Jorge

From the millennium-old battlements of this castle, we have a stunning view of the city in the company of roaming peacocks and other birds. Walking down the hill,  you also have breathtaking views over Alfama, the city’s medieval village-like neighborhood.

2. Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara

Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara is located in the Bairro Alto district. This garden has certainly the most romantic view of Lisbon with St. George’s Castle standing on the opposite hill.

3. Padrão dos Descobrimentos

This monument was built in honour of the Portuguese heroes of the Age of Discovery. From its top, we can see the most iconic points of Lisbon including the Jeronimos Monastery and the Tower of Belem.

4. Miradouro de Santa Catarina

This viewpoint is nestled in the unassuming back streets of one of the hills of the Old Town. Close to the Bairro Alto, it has stunning views over the Tagus River and the 25th of April Bridge. It’s the ideal perfect place to enjoy the sunset in Lisbon.

5. Elevador de Santa Justa

The view is wonderful, but what attracts everyone here is the Santa Justa Elevator (or Carmo Lift), a neo-Gothic monument with a metal structure that connects the Rua do Ouro and Rua do Carmo to the Largo do Carmo. This lift is the best way to go from the Baixa district up to the ruins of the Igreja do Carmo church. From the top, the view boasts a grand panorama of Lisbon’s famous sights.
