Palace of Culture and Science- Warsaw

The Palace of Culture and Science was the monument that most caught my attention in my first day in Warsaw and I guess that also happens with everybody that is visiting it for the first time because it’s the city’s most visible landmark. The structure was conceived as a “gift from the Soviet people to the Polish nation”, and it’s the tallest building in Poland. The construction started in 1952 and finished in 1955. It was built according to the design of the Soviet architect Lev Rudnev mixing Stalinist architecture and Polish historicism inspired by American art deco skyscrapers. The building was originally known as the Joseph Stalin Palace of Culture and Science, but in the wake of destalinization the dedication to Stalin was revoked. Many Poles don’t like the building because they consider it to be a symbol of Soviet domination in the past, and this negative feeling still persists in some people today. As it’s located quite centrally in Warsaw, the Palace of Culture and Science plays a very important role in the life of the city. Nowadays, it’s the headquarters of many companies and public institutions. The place has two museums (Museum of Evolution and Museum of Technology), cinemas, theaters, libraries, sports clubs, universities (including Collegium Civitas), scientific institutions and authorities of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The monument also has a very special illumination, allowing it to take various colors at night.

O Leste Europeu parece ter coisas bem interessantes pra se fazer. Nunca fui pra lá, mas tenho muita vontade de conhecer Praga, Viena, Budapeste e a Polônia. Parabéns pelo blog!
